Gold Post Medal for All Time! 899 Posts My daughter wanted to be a witch for Halloween this year and wanted a broom for her costume. The broom I made was easy to make and can be easily customized to match any witch costume.
Total Time: 1 hour
Yield: 1 broom
Supplies:
- 1 wooden dowel (5/8 in. x 36 in.) ($1.29)
- 1-2 pkg. twigs or grasses ($6.99)
- 1 pkg. black aluminum florist wire ($3.99)
- 2 foam brushes ($.49 ea.)
- paint, any color ($1.49)
- glitter paint, optional ($1.49)
Steps:
- Paint the dowel with the paint color you selected. It may take a few coats to achieve the desired color.
- Spread out twigs/grass (broom material) and carefully brush with glitter paint if you want.
- Using a hot glue gun, run a thick line of glue at one end of the dowel. Attach a section of your broom material. Repeat, making sure to line up the tops of the material as you go around the dowel. Press firmly so that the glue attaches to as much of the material as possible.
- Add additional layers of broom material to achieve the fullness that you want.
- Cut a small section of wire and wrap it around top part of the broom material. Be sure to pull it tight, then twist the ends together to secure it.
- Use the remaining wire to wrap around the broom, where the broom material and the dowel are glued together. This will help hold on any material that didn't touch the glue and gives the broom an authentic look. When you reach the end of the wire, carefully tuck the end of it into the broom material.
- At this point you can add glitter paint to the handle and additional glitter paint to the broom material, if desired. Allow to dry completely before use.
