Salt Spider Web Painting - spiderweb card on the mantelThis is a fun activity for the kids to play with. And especially if you don't have glitter on hand, you can use salt as a cheaper alternative and some water colors, or acrylic paint mixed with water.

This is not just for Halloween themes, you can make any painting/drawing with the glue.

Total Time: 20 minutes

Supplies:

  • card
  • acrylic paint
  • glue
  • salt
  • Q-tip
Salt Spider Web Painting - supplies
 

Steps:

  1. Use black construction paper. Or, if you don't have any on hand - paint a sturdy piece of paper (or card) with acrylic black paint. Allow to dry.
    2. Salt Spider Web Painting - use black paper or paint some
     
  2. Using liquid glue, draw your design. I went with a spiderweb.
    3. Salt Spider Web Painting - using school glue draw a cross
     
    Salt Spider Web Painting - add two more crossing lines of glue for the base structure of the web
     
    Salt Spider Web Painting - draw glue lines connecting the spokes, with drooping U shapes
     
    Salt Spider Web Painting - add a second web ring between the center and the outer one
     
  3. Place your painting in a shallow box, making this project less messy and have your child sprinkle salt all over.
    4. Salt Spider Web Painting - place drawing in a shallow box to contain mess and pour salt over the glue outline

  4. Shake off the remainder of the salt. This project can be left as is, but you can add color!
    5. Salt Spider Web Painting - shake off excess salt
     
  5. Using watercolor or acrylic paint mix with water. Dab in a Q-tip and touch to the drawing and watch the salt change colors.
