Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - Snow White being attacked by zombie dwarvesI love taking regular Halloween costumes and giving their storyline a bit of a twist. This year, the narrative of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves met a terrifying zombie apocalypse. The dwarves turned first, then got ahold of Snow. Obviously, it's a bit of a cute joke costume as I used little plush dwarf dolls for the planned attack. Including creating the open wound with makeup, this costume takes about an hour to put together. It was totally a hit on Halloween!

I've had this Snow White dress for 20 years and had only ever worn it as the plain old character. I try to reinvent storylines to save money, and get a good laugh! I spent about $8 on each dwarf doll from eBay, and chose ones around 10 inches in size or a touch bigger. Make sure to read the end of this tutorial as it contains my how-to for making fabric-safe fake blood. This comes in very handy for making a variety of gory costumes, not just a zombie one.

Total Time: 60 minutes

Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - supplies

Steps:

  1. Put on your Snow White dress and place a dwarf on your shoulder so it looks like it's biting your neck. Stick a piece of Velcro on your shoulder.
  2. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - Velcro for attaching a dwarf

  3. Stick the other side of the Velcro on your dwarf.
  4. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - stick other piece of Velcro to the dwarf so that it looks like it is biting when attached

  5. Attach dwarf to your neck with the help of the Velcro. It will sit on you nicely.
  6. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - zombie dwarf in place

  7. While your patient little dwarf is still attached to you, so you get an idea of where is a good placement, make an outline of your neck wound with red lipliner.
  8. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - outline of neck wound made with lip liner

  9. Paint on a nice thick coat of liquid latex in the wound area.

  11. Immediately dab on bits of tiny toilet paper onto the painted area.
  12. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - dab on bits of TP in the wound

  13. Paint more liquid latex onto the toilet paper. Repeat this process a couple times so it's thick.
  14. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - add more layers of latex over the TP until it is thick

  15. Sit and wait until it dries, or speed up the process with a hair dryer on the cool setting.
  16. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - allow to dry or use a hair dryer to speed up the process

  17. Dab foundation on all over the wound so it matches your skin.

  19. Take your small scissors and cut a slit open from end to end.
  20. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - use scissors to cut a slit end to end

  21. Cut out some flaps in some areas to make it look more busted.
  22. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - cut out some flaps to make it more raggedy

  23. Dab some of the fake blood into your wound. Really get in there! You can remove your patient dwarf for now.
  24. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - remove dwarf and add fake blood to the wound

  25. Take your black eyeliner and draw veins from the wound shooting outward toward your chest and up your neck and face.
  26. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - use eyeliner to add veins out from the wound

  27. Take a sponge and gently blot on a very small amount of foundation over the veins.
  28. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - use a sponge to gently blot on some foundation over the veins

  29. Now take your eyeliner again and make heavier black veins around to show depth. I made them extra heavy people could make them out from far away.
  30. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - with eyeliner make veins darker for depth

  31. Tie your hair into braids, pin to the top of your head, and put on your wig. Pull out some of your own hair for a more realistic hairline. If you don't have dark hair, use some mascara on it to blend.
  32. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - put on wig

  33. Now that your wig is on, do some finishing touches on the vein work. Dabbing on a bit of liquid latex on the wound flap edges makes for awesome pus-filled looking gnarliness. Give it a try!
  34. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - touch up veins and wound

  35. The veins should be heavier at the wound then muted going out. (This is a photo of my makeup after I took off the dress, but I want you to see how it should look.)

  37. Having the dwarf hang off the hip needs a lot more strength than Velcro can handle. Take a piece of double-sided carpet tape and attach the dwarf to your hip at the mouth and at the belly.
  38. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - attach dwarf to hip with double sided carpet tape

  39. If you'd like some fake blood on your outfit or on your dwarves, make some that you can wash off easily. Mix a bit of cornstarch in a dish with a touch of water.
  40. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - making washable fake blood, cornstarch and water mixture

  41. Add some ketchup and stir. Add 3 drops of red food colouring and the tiniest half drop of blue food colouring. Mix.
  42. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - add ketsup, red and blue food coloring and mix

  43. Test out the fabric safety of your fake blood by adding it to an old white t-shirt or piece of cloth.
  44. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - test fabric safety by trying it first on an old white shirt

  45. If it washes out nicely with some water and dish detergent, you're good to go! Spray that fake blood on!
  46. Snow White and the Undead Dwarves - should wash out with dish soap and water
